Trump Faces Backlash for Behavior During 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

Former President Donald Trump has sparked controversy for his behavior during the 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero. Moments before the first moment of silence, which commemorated the impact of American Airlines Flight 11 on the North Tower of the World Trade Center, Trump was seen winking and smiling at photographers. He also repeatedly mouthed “thank you” to the crowd, according to The Daily Beast.

Trump, who was positioned alongside JD Vance and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, appeared upbeat following a heated debate with Kamala Harris. Supporters cheered with phrases like “We love you, Trump” and “We need you,” as Trump engaged with the crowd.

The reaction on social media was largely negative, with many users describing Trump’s behavior as “creepy” and “inappropriate.” This criticism follows similar sentiments expressed regarding Trump’s conduct during a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where he was photographed smiling and giving a thumbs up while posing with Gold Star families.

“He treats the 9/11 Memorial like he treats Arlington National Cemetery,” one user remarked on X. Another user, Winnie Hewett, criticized Trump as lacking “boundaries” and “morals.” Observers also noted that Trump seemed “bored” during the moment of silence, contrasting sharply with other attendees like President Joe Biden, Vice President Harris, Rudy Giuliani, and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who were seen bowing their heads in solemnity.

Trump’s actions during memorial events have previously attracted criticism. Shortly after the September 11 attacks in 2001, he controversially claimed that his building, 40 Wall Street, was “the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan” before the World Trade Center was constructed. This statement was widely criticized for its inaccuracy and insensitivity.
