Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Endorses Kamala Harris for President, Citing Trump’s Threat to Rule of Law

In a pivotal political moment, former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, highlighting the serious threat he believes Donald Trump poses to the rule of law. Gonzales, who served under President George W. Bush, shared his concerns in an op-ed, stating that despite his Republican affiliation, he feels compelled to support Harris. He expressed his belief that the country needs a leader who respects the Constitution and unites the nation, according to a recent report by CBS News.

Gonzales’ Concerns About Trump’s Potential Abuse of Power

Gonzales, who resigned from his post as attorney general amid controversy in 2007, raised alarm about the unchecked power of the presidency. He argued that members of Congress have shown an inability to curb executive overreach, placing greater emphasis on the character of the person elected. The former attorney general pointed out that while the Supreme Court plays a role in checking presidential powers, recent rulings may allow a president to act in self-interest under the guise of official duties.

“Power is intoxicating,” Gonzales wrote, reflecting on Trump’s rhetoric and behavior. He expressed concerns that Trump, if re-elected, would likely abuse his position for personal gain, disregarding the responsibilities of the presidency.

Gonzales cited the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack as a defining moment of Trump’s disregard for the law. He criticized Trump’s failure to act during the insurrection and pointed to the numerous legal challenges Trump now faces. According to Gonzales, these incidents demonstrate Trump’s pattern of behavior that undermines the rule of law.

The criminal charges and convictions against Trump, Gonzales argued, cast doubt on whether Trump is fit to hold office again. “These cases show that Trump is someone who fails to act, time and time again, in accordance with the rule of law,” he added.

Harris as a Champion of Justice

While Gonzales acknowledged that the full scope of Harris’s governance remains to be seen, he expressed confidence in her commitment to justice. As a former prosecutor and attorney general of California, Harris has built a reputation for upholding the law, a trait that Gonzales believes is crucial in the current political climate.

“Harris has sworn fidelity to the rule of law,” Gonzales wrote, noting her long record of pursuing justice in her legal career. He emphasized that voting for Harris will require Americans to place their faith in her character and judgment.

Other Republican Endorsements

Gonzales is not alone in his endorsement of Harris. Prominent Republicans, including former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, have also backed Harris in recent weeks. These endorsements highlight a growing divide within the Republican Party, as some members express deep concern over Trump’s continued influence on the party and the nation.
