Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona argued this week that the Senate filibuster — which she staunchly opposes eliminating — “protects the democracy of our nation.”
“I’ve long been a supporter of the filibuster, because it is a tool that protects the democracy of our nation,” Sinema told reporters. “Rather than allowing our country to ricochet wildly every two to four years back and forth between parties.”
“The idea of the filibuster was created by those who came before us in the United States Senate…to encourage senators to find bipartisanship and work together,” she added.
Sinema said she believes she is proof that bipartisanship is possible, despite those in the Senate who say it is not.
While Sinema claims to be concerned about protecting “the rights of the minority from the majority, regardless of which party is in the majority at the time,” in reality, the filibuster allows for minority tyranny.
